10 months!

Warning...huge cliche ahead:

I cannot believe my babies are 10 months old!

It seems like just yesterday they were teeny tiny, 8 pounds combined  in the Emory nicu.
Then they were 3 weeks old and we were doing their newborn photo shoot in our empty basement.
(Photo cred: AGW Photography ~ agw photography.net ~... She is truly amazing!!)
Then they were a month old and I dressed them as zombies for halloween. They didn't actually go out to "candy-treat" as Peyton calls it, but they had to have a costume!

Fast-forward to today: (well, technically yesterday, since I didn't get around to posting on their actual date)
Elise has hair...Meri, not so much.
Meri crawls all over the place, so it's not very easy to get a picture of her anymore!! Elise is a little behind in the traveling department, but she making progress. Currently she scoots on her butt and leans waaaay over to get to where she wants to go.
Then there's this...they are already messing with each other. Meri is a big fan of stealing toys, so I kind of laugh a little when Elise starts to get her back.

"Time flies when you're having fun!"

It really has been a crazy journey. There are days when I think "I've got this" and I have it handled, and there are days when I feel like I'm not going to make it to bedtime!! But we do, they go to sleep, and my wonderful hubby and I hit the reset button!!
This is him with Peyton...I mostly just take pics of the kids or I would have chosen a pic with his clothes on. :-/

Farm Animal Finger Puppets

A couple of months ago, I participated with a few friends in a "Toddler Busy Bag Swap."  There were 6 of us, and we each chose 1 toddler friendly project/toy/activity to make, and we made 6 of them.  Then we all got together, had some food, and exchanged our projects.  That way, we each went home with 6 different activities for our little ones.
I made felt finger puppets, and just like every project that I do, I went a little overboard.  I made 10 different animals, and I made 10 of each animal!  I thought it would be good to have a couple extra to use as gifts.  Well, by the time I finished, I decided that 10 finger puppets was a little much.  My child would want to put them all on at one time, and that would get super annoying...so I decided to put 5 animals in each "farm."  Which gave me 20 little farms!!  I used 6 for the swap, and I've used a few for gifts.  Kids ages 2-3 really love them!!
It took me about 3 weeks to complete the animals and the barn carry bag...this is working during naptime, and some evenings.  I used my sewing machine to sew together the basic puppet, and then used hot glue to attach the various felt/eyes/etc that made up the animal.  Here are pictures of each animal!!
 Chicken!!
 Sheep!
 Cow!
 Horsie!
 Pig!
 Puppy Dog!
 Duck!
 Bird!
 Mouse!
Cat!

Then, the barn carry bag.  My daughter, who is 2 & 1/2, loves taking the animals in and out of the bag.  She calls it her farm, and she gets excited when we give a farm to one of her friends.

These are the pieces for the barn.  First I sewed the long bottom piece to the bottom of the front and back pieces.
Then, I folded the bottom piece in half so that the front/back were flush, and sewed up the sides.
Flip it inside out, and you're ready to make it look like a barn!

I glued pipe cleaners around the outline of the barn.
Then I used pipe cleaners to create the barn door and window.

Then I forgot to take pictures of teh finished barn!!  I used the short yellow pieces above and cut them to look like hay, then glued them into the window.  The top of the bag is open, and I glued a small square of velcro to close.

These were a lot of fun to make, and it was fun looking around on the internet for ideas and creating the little guys!

Caffeine is my Frenemy...

So, I had a cup of coffee (brewed in my amazing Keurig!) at 2:30 am, and now I can't sleep.  I'm not sure why I'm surprised.  I'm really an idiot for drinking it, but there is a back-story!  I've been lying in bed for an hour trying to sleep, and thought up a blog post.  Since I'm a huge slacker at actually writing the blog posts I think of, I thought I would get up and write...then maybe when my head is empty, I can sleep!!
So, my baby girl was running a fever on Monday afternoon..not too high...102 or so, and we put her to bed with Tylenol.  By 3:30 am when I checked on her, she was down to 99, and stayed there the rest of the night.  Yesterday (Tuesday) she was fever-free, super happy & hyper, and I just figured that it was 2-year molars or something.  {But I was a good girl and obeyed the 24-hour fever rule and kept her home from pre-school.}

Then....
2:30am this morning (Wednesday) - I woke up to this nasty barking cough, and labored breathing!!  Not me, her!  So I get her out of bed, wake up my husband, and proceed to panic.  I decide that we need to go to the ER, because she's never coughed like that or had trouble breathing before.  {I know...all you veteran moms have already diagnosed her...we're getting there!}
ANYway - I hand her off to my hubs so I can get dressed, put in my contacts, brush my teeth, and I start to feel dizzy and sweaty and like I'm going to pass out!  Yeah - it's my kid having the breathing issues, and I'm the one passing out...go figure.  Anyway - some deep breaths, cold washcloth, and a glass of water help, and I'm dressed and ready to go.  But I decide that I might panic again on the drive to the hospital, especially if she keeps coughing, so I make Aaron get up and go with.  {He's such an amazing husband and daddy!!}
He even lets P put buckets on his head.  But I digress.

Because of the ridiculous panicking, and wondering if I'm going to get to go back to bed,  I decide I need to have some coffee, so I fired up the Keurig as we were getting coats on.  It really is way too convenient.  I savored the delicious, comforting taste of my hot cream-laced espresso blend {yup, the fully-loaded caffeine stuff}, as we drove off.
We headed to the pediatric ER at Kennestone, which by the way is amazing!  Aaron totally wants to go there if he gets sick instead of the grown-up ER.  Turns out she has croup - first time ever, so don't judge me for panicking! - from a viral infection.  Some Motrin, oral steroid, and a red popsicle put her on the mend, and we were home 2 hours from when we left.
Baby girl and AK went right to sleep, but because of my bad decision to not drink decaf...here I am.  Oh well, sleep will come at some point, and it really did taste amazing!!

PS:  It's 5:30 am, and I'm NEVER awake this early.  This really is tragic, and I have no intentions of making it my norm.  There will be much snuggles and TV time today with the sick baby and sleepy mommy!

PSS:  I learned from the super-friendly and energetic Nurse {blanking on her name!} that the best treatment for croup is to go outside in the cold, or open the freezer and breathe in the cold air.  The cold helps open the airways.  Popsicles (red of course) are also a great treatment in reducing the swelling and helping open up the throat.  The labored breathing is just coming from the throat and isn't really wheezing, although it sounds awful.  But you do have to be on the lookout for signs of pneumonia...a whole different category of panic that we don't have to deal with tonight, thank the Lord!!

P's 2nd Birthday Party!

This weekend I threw my daughter an Elmo 2nd birthday party.  She loooooovessss Elmo, so it was the perfect thing.  I actually decided on Elmo because of this dress that my mother-in-law bought her:
I made the cake...Elmo, of course!

We had a lot of people coming, so I decided to do the Elmo face on a base layer with plain white frosting.  It was the perfect place to put her name and the candles (which she refused to blow out).

I also did Elmo cake pops.  (A post on that will come later.)
Many thanks to my friend Janelle at Peace Love & Cake Pops for the instructions on how to decorate them!  I also looked up pictures (because I need visuals) on Bakerella's site, but I did make a few modifications to accommodate my time frame and laziness!!

For food we had hotdogs (for the kids), BBQ (for the adults), slaw, chips, watermelon/tomato salad, a cheese tray, and THIS...
Yep...that's Elmo out of veggies.  I just love Pinterest!!  This is the blog I got the picture from...I didn't have time to utilize any of her other ideas, but there are some great ones there!

I spent the week browsing the internet and crafting for the decorations:

The tissue balls I got from this blog.  The yarn balloons can be found here.  I have tons of yarn, so I didn't even need to buy any for this project!  And the "2" I made up all by my own self!  It's just cut out of poster board (although cardboard probably would have been better, but I didn't have a big enough box laying around), with scraps of tissue paper hot-glued on.  I recycled the tissue paper from trimming the tissue balls...how economical and earth-friendly is that?!?!?

More decorations:

I bought these foam puzzle pieces when P was a baby and learning to sit up, so I could have something to put on the hardwoods in my kitchen.  Now she just likes to disassemble them and spread them all over my kitchen!  I put them up (9 tiles in all, with different Sesame Street characters) with masking tape on the wall in the breakfast nook where the kids ate.  I took the yellow/red color scheme for the party from the Elmo tile.

AND....for one of my favorite parts of all.....

The GOODY BAGS!!
I was proud of these...they took me almost an entire evening to make.  They are craft bags from Michael's, and I used my scrapbooking tools to cut out the face pieces. Then stuck them on with a glue stick.  I found a picture in an Etsy store, and I made them better, I think!  Inside the treat bags I had a box of crayons, a snack bag of goldfish, a small Elmo coloring sheet, and some candy.  (Because, "Elmo loves his goldfish; his crayons too....")
The goldfish/crayon idea I unabashedly stole from my dear friend Michelle, who is going to throw her daughter an Elmo party in December!

It was a super fun party...we had over 20 kids there, plus adults, so my house was LOUD for the 2 hours of the party...but it was such fun.  I'll probably do it again next year...

Time Flies...

This is my girl today:

This was yesterday:

Okay...maybe not yesterday, but sometimes it feels like it!

Peyton turned 2 yesterday, and I honestly can't believe how fast the time has gone by.  I know that everyone says that, but it really is so true!  I look back at the pictures of my tiny preemie baby (4 lb, 9 oz @ 6 1/2 weeks early) and am amazed at the way she has changed.  I sometimes miss the tiny baby, but I love the little girl she has grown into.

She's not afraid to get dirty!

She is excited about pre-school and her book bag!

Elmo is her favorite!

She loves to eat...just about anything, especially snacks!

I love this girl!!
